Before I enrolled in my first social work class, I thought social workers could obtain jobs in fields such as mental health, substance abuse, child welfare, family services, hospice care, and school counseling. Now I understand that social workers can obtain jobs in a variety of areas, such as advocacy, policy development, community development, research, community organization, and program administration. The pros of generalist training are that it provides a broad base of knowledge about the social work profession and provides students with the skills to work in a variety of settings (Cournoyer, 2014).
